West Bengal is one of the most prominent states of eastern India and forms the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The state is bounded by Assam, Sikkim and Bhutan to the north-east and Orissa to the south. To the western part of the state lies Jharkhand and Bihar while Nepal lies to the north-west.
West Bengal was a part of a number of empires and kingdoms during the past two millennia. After the British consolidated their position in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the city of Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, served as the capital of British India for over 200 years. After India got independence in the year 1947 the state was divided into two parts namely East Pakistan or Bangladesh and West Bengal.

The major hill stations in West Bengal are Darjeeling and Kalimpong.These places are thronged by tourists in large number all the year round. The beautiful Himalayas and the sprawling tea gardens have added to the beauty of these hills. The famous toy train of Darjeeling has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
